Franck Massard, Priorat, Spain

Franck Massard knows good wine. Voted the UK's top somellier in 1996 and later moving from wine serving to wine making, he learnt his trade with the Torres family before starting his own venture in Priorat in 2004. Franck believes all good wine starts in the vineyard and as such he devotes huge amounts of time to making sure the vines are in balance with the local ecosystem, employing organic viticulture and caring meticulously to ensure good biodiversity. This wine comes from a parcel in Pobaleda upon the famous "licorella" slate soils and is managed organically. Yields are painfully low at barely 1kg per vine. Following hand picking they are taken to the cellar in small crates to keep the fruit in pristine condition.
